Michelle's Record 1600 Meter Race
Huber Heights, OH - On a picture perfect day eleven Eaton eagles made the trip to Huber Heights to participate in the 15th Annual Wayne Invitational which is arguably the states top premier regular season invitational.
What makes the invitational so special is the caliber of the talent which includes numerous state champions, state placers and state qualifiers that come from all over Ohio to get a chance to compete against the best. Also adding to the excitement is the near capacity crowd cheering on the athletes in every race.
The two day meet started on Thursday with Kayla St. Marie and Andy Newport competing in the "Rising Stars" 3200 meter run. Both finished 5th in their individual races and set new PR's (personal records).
On Friday the balance of the eagles hit the track and continued the success that Kayla and Andy started on Thursday. Starting things off was Alan Sarver's 4th place finish in the pole vault with a height of 14' 0" which ties his personal best. That's the 4th meet in a row that Alan has cleared 14 feet. Great job Alan!
Running in the "Elite" 1600 meter (a race that included 5 State Champions) Michelle McKinney set a new school record of 5:05.76 and finished 6th overall (the old school record of 5:16.5 was held by Jenny Woods and was set back in 1987).
A few races later Michelle was back on the track for the 800 meter which was one of the closest races of the evening. The race came down to the last 20 meters to separate places 1-4 with Michelle finishing 3rd in a time of 2:16.75.
To round out the night on the track was Taylor Broermann's 11th place finish and record setting performance of 11:42.12 in the "Elite" 3200 meter run (the old school record of 11:47.9 was held by Katie Burkett and was set back in 2008).
Not to be outdone the "iron men and women" also had a great meet. Lead by senior Caitlin Highley's 4th place finish in the discus and school record breaking hammer throw of 98' 5" which was good enough for 8th place.
