EHS Alumni Take the Spotlight in January & February
2/16/2015
Eaton, OH - The 2016 HS & JH Track seasons may still yet be a few weeks away but three of our alumni have been busy this winter on the indoor track circuit. That is, busy studying, traveling with their college team around the country, breaking records and setting new PR's. Bottom line - business as usual for these three!
Taylor Broermann appears to be fully recovered after missing the entire fall cross country season with a pre-stress fracture. However, patience, therapy/cross training and some good base mileage has paid off as Taylor finally competed in her first college race @ Cedarville University Invitational - Cedarville, Ohio on Feb 5th.
In her Miami debut, Taylor won the mile race in a time of 5:16.72 and then topped off a great day @ Cedarville with a third place finish in the 3000m run in a solid time of 10:45.09. Then this past weekend Taylor and the Lady Redhawks traveled to Nashville, TN to participate in the Music City Challenge Invitational. For the second week in a row, Taylor set a new PR in the mile race of 5:10.35 which was good enough for 35th place. Taylor and the RedHawks will be in action this weekend at the OSU "Buckeye Tune-Up" on Friday.
Also making his college debut, Seth Reynolds of IU East participated in his first college competition @ the Trine University Indoor Classic - Angola, IN. In outstanding rookie fashion, it only took one race for Seth to settle into the college racing groove. That being, winning his 60m Hurdle prelim heat in a new IU East school record time of 8.78 seconds. Then less than an hour later broke his own new school record by running a fast 8.77 seconds in the 60m Hurdle finals race which was good enough for 3rd place. In addition to two great record breaking 60m Hurdle races Seth also placed 6th in the men's high jump with a mark of 1.83m (6' ft.).
Once again, Seth continued his record setting ways on Feb. 6th @ the Anderson University Indoor Invitational - Anderson, IN by lowered his own 60m hurdles school record to 8.66, good enough for a 3rd place and then placed 6th in the high jump with a mark of 1.73m (5' 8").
Seth Reynolds has gotten off to a very strong start and currently holds two national NAIA top indoor ranking marks - top 60 in the men's 60 meter hurdles and top 70 in the men's high jump. Marks that Seth hopes to improve upon this weekend at the DePauw University Classic @ DePauw University - Greencastle, IN. which will wrap up the regular indoor season for him and his Red Wolf teammates.
Coming off a redshirt spring track season and successful fall cross country season, Michelle McKinney has had a great, but busy indoor season thus far. Opening up with back to back weekend home indoor invitationals in January @ the UK campus, off one week and then back to back weekend meets at Virginia Tech University and Arkansas University.
At the first UK meet of the year (1/15/2016) Michelle ran the opening 1200m leg of the DMR relay team that won in a fast time of 11:32.35. A time which for the last two weeks of January was the top NCAA DMR in the nation and now currently ranks 29th nationally and 5th in SEC. Michelle and her relay teammates haven't ran the DMR since, but will in the upcoming SEC Championships at the end of the month. The DMR goals are to finish in the top three in the SEC Championships and run a fast enough time to qualify for the NCAA D1 Indoor National Championships in early February (top 12 fastest times qualify).
In addition, Michelle's indoor season races have included the 800m once, Mile three times and even played "rabbit" in the 3000m this past weekend @ Arkansas which helped two of her UK teammates break the 10 minute mark. A "rabbit" in collegiate track terms means a pace-setter who leads and sets a designated fast pace for the first section of a race to ensure a fast time for the racers. In this race, Michelle the "rabbit" lead the field through the first 1600 meters in a time of 5:11 and then as planned stepped off the track to let the racers battle it out for the remaining 1400 meters. Michelle's "rabbit" role came one day after winning the Tyson Invitational - Arkansas University - Fayetteville, AR women's one mile race in a time of 4:55.77 which is a new PR. Michelle and the Wildcats next meet will be the SEC Indoor Championships - Feb 26th & 27th @ the University of Arkansas.
As you can see Taylor, Seth and Michelle's continued strong work ethic and winning attitudes have carried over to college. Even more impressive, all three are carrying a GPA of 3.5 or higher in addition to their success on the track. That's right, being a student/athlete is a dual full-time job that all three take very seriously and are great examples of what our Eaton athletes can accomplish if they set their mind to it.
Congratulations and continued success Taylor, Seth and Michelle, your Eaton Track family is proud of you!
