Huber Heights, OH - A small group of Eaton athletes traveled to the prestigious Wayne Invitational this past Thursday and Friday to participate in what has been called "the toughest regular season track meet in Ohio." Top state ranked athletes from all three divisions, primarily D1, come to the meet to run against the best and see how they stack up at this stage of the season and this years races were awesome.
To finish in the top 8 and get on the awards stand at the Wayne Invitational is extremely tough to accomplish. Every race is loaded with many of the top ranked individuals in the state and they are all primarily D1 athletes. Coach McKinney said, "this meet is about competing against the best in the state and winning an event or getting on the awards stand it just icing on the cake."
Michelle McKinney had a great evening by winning the loaded 1600m in a new school record time of 5:02..55. The "1600 Elite Race" of 17 included the current state ranked #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #8, #10, #12, #16, $17 #23, #26 and #27 milers (5 State Champions, in addition to State placers, State qualifiers). Michelle led the race from beginning to end holding off a couple of runners that attempted to pass her in the third lap and last 300 meters of the race. Coach McKinney said, "Michelle ran a very tactically smart race against some very talented runners and her speed crushed everyone in the end. A great, great win and new school record to boot!"
Fast forward an hour and Michelle was back on the track running in the "800m Elite Race" which she led until the final 200 meters but unlike normal, she just didn't have much left in her legs to pull out the win. However, she did finish a respectful 5th in a time of fast time of 2:19.37. Great double Michelle!
Taylor Broermann finished up the evening for the Eagles by running in the "3200m Elite Race" which she finished 17th in with a season best time of 11:49.69. Just like the 800 and 1600 meter runs, the 3200m race was loaded with many of the states top ranked runners. Taylor ran in 6th place for the majority of the race but fell off the pace in the last 3 laps to finish 17th, "Taylor ran a very fast pace for the first 5 laps, perhaps too fast, and she paid for it in the last three. However, I loved her competitiveness and pushing herself to run with the tops in the state which is what tonight was all about. She is improving week by week and will surprise some people come district and regional time. Taylor is very capable of making it to state in the 3200m run if she stays healthy and keeps believing in herself," said coach McKinney.
Also participating for the girls were:
Maddie Bowman in the Shot Put (20th; 30' 11"), Discus (13th; 93" 11") & just missing the awards stand in the Hammer Throw (9th; 78' 05"). Great job Maddie!
Brittany George in the Shot Put (27th; 28' 00") and Hammer Throw (17th; 59' 9"), NIce Double Up Brittany!
Hanna Schmidt in the Discus (25th: 82' 06").
The men's team of Andy Newport, Zavier Spears, Seth Gard, Brandon George, Troy Morrison and Shane Hammock also participated and did well.
Andy Newport finished 9th in the "Rising Stars 3200m Run" with a season PR of 10:13.24 "I was very pleased with the way Andy races today. Every week he just keeps getting better and this is yet another smart race for Andy this year. He's right on track, maybe ahead, of were I wanted him to be at this stage of the season," said Coach McKinney.
Seth Gard finished 32nd in the "1600 Meter Run Rising Stars' in a season PR of 4:48.89, "The transition form junior high to high school track is a tough one for boys, especially in the distance events. When you are running against guys (Men) that are 3 and sometimes 5 years older than you it's tough. However, in a couple of years Seth will be the one getting the best of everyone. He's running better every week and it will be interesting to see how much lower he can drop hit 1600m time over the next few weeks," Coach McKinney.
Zavier Spears finished 23rd in 53.05 that although not a season PR was still a very good time for the cool weather conditions which are always hard on sprinters. "It's tough for sprinters to really get loose in cool weather conditions like today. I know Zavier gave it all he had and although I know he wasn't happy with his place and time, he did great. Taking into consideration the competition and cool weather he did much better than he thinks. This is about preparing Zavier both mentally and physically for the upcoming districts, regionals and hopefully state championships. He will not see this many fast 400 meter runners every again this season, Zavier did a great job!", said Coach McKinney.
Brandon George finished 33rd in the Discus Throw with a distance of 113' 2", 15th in the Hammer Throw with a throw of 113' 2" and 25th in the Shot Put with a throw of 41' 3.25".
Troy Morrison finished 41st in the Shot Put with a throw of 37' 1"
Shane Hammock finished 50th in the Discus Throw with a distance of 102' 9" and 20th in the Hammer Throw with a throw of 97' even.
Great job to all that have participated in this very prestigious and competitive meet. If you want to be the best you've got to compete against the best and that is exactly what our Eagles did at Wayne. Great job to everyone.
The Eagles will compete in the weather shortened Preble County Championships on Monday, the Lebanon Invitational on Wednesday with Taylor Broermann and Michelle McKinney will be traveling to the "Rod Russell" Mason Invitational on Friday to run in the "Elite 1600 Meter Race." Good luck this week to everyone.
